Seal-Watching Boat Trip to the Malusi Islands

Grey seals have lived in the Baltic Sea for around 10,000 years and are the largest water mammals in this region. This tour takes you by motorboat from the north coast of Estonia through the Kolga archipelago to the Malusi Islets, where grey seals gather near the low rocky islands far from the mainland shore.

Highlights of the tour:

  • Take a motorboat ride through the Kolga archipelago to the Malusi Islets
  • Watch grey seals – the largest mammals in the Baltic Sea – from the boat
  • Learn how classical music is used to attract curious seals to approach
  • Hear stories about Estonian coastal traditions and the islands of the north coast
  • Understand more about the daily life and habitat of grey seals in the Baltic Sea
  • Tour conducted with full respect for the welfare of the seals

Grey seals are curious animals. On most trips, they swim close to the boat within minutes. To encourage them to come out and meet us, we use an unusual technique: classical music. Sometimes seals only surface briefly, but on a good day, they can be seen lying on the rocks near the islets. Binoculars are available on board in case we cannot get close enough.

The journey to the Malusi Islets takes around one hour by motorboat from Kaberneeme harbor. On the way, your guide talks about the smaller islands along the route, the communities that lived here before WWII, and the coastal folk traditions of North Estonia.

Regular seal-watching tours run from July to September. Private seal-watching tours are also available departing from Prangli Island.

PRICE INCLUDES: guide service, motorboat trip from Kaberneeme harbor to the Malusi Islands.

PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF: Transfer from Tallinn to the north coast is not included and can be arranged at an extra charge.

Sea journey through the Kolga archipelago to the Malusi Islets

Grey seals live on low islets and reefs far from the mainland shore and human settlements. The journey to the Malusi Islets takes around one hour. On the way, your guide shares stories about the island communities here before WWII, the Baltic Sea, and coastal folk traditions of North Estonia. Warmer clothing is recommended – it can be cold on the water even in summer.

3

Seal watching with music

Grey seals are curious animals and usually swim close to the boat. To draw them out, we use classical music – a clever and harmless way to attract their attention. Sometimes seals surface only briefly to investigate; on a good day, they can be spotted resting on the rocks near the islets. Binoculars are available on board if we cannot get close enough.

4

Learn about grey seals and the Baltic Sea

On the way back, you are welcome to ask questions about the seals’ habitat, breeding, and protection in the Baltic Sea.

We had a great experience with your company on our seal watching trip this summer. There were a lot of seals and we had a great time. Especially with your guide, Helena, who was not just very knowledgeable and gave us great tips, but also made our kids feel very welcome on board. It is definitely a trip that is worth it and we will recommend it highly to our friends and colleagues.

During the tour, Diana spoke perfect English and told us a lot about the islands and their former inhabitants. She took plenty of time to answer our questions. Of course, the highlight was the seals, which we had a great time observing. It was an unforgettable trip!
