Hiking Lovers Tour in Lahemaa National Park: Three Waterfalls
This hiking tour takes you into the quiet heart of Lahemaa National Park — through forests, river valleys, and waterfalls, where nature sets the pace. It is a slow, authentic nature experience that combines hiking with elements of forest bathing: listening, observing, and moving mindfully through the landscape.
It is a tour for people who enjoy walking, silence, and real contact with nature.
Highlights of the Tour
- A guided forest hike in Lahemaa National Park.
- Visits to three waterfalls: Joaveski, Nõmmeveski, and Vasaristi.
- Walking along rivers, canyons, and forest paths.
- Elements of forest bathing — slowing down and engaging your senses.
- Stories and observations about nature, folklore, and local landscapes.
- A tour that changes with seasons, weather, and water levels.
Lahemaa is one of the most peaceful hiking areas in Estonia. In winter, frozen rivers, snow-covered forests, and icy waterfalls create a quiet, almost meditative atmosphere. Those make the area feel almost like a small piece of Estonian Lapland. In warmer seasons, the same trails reveal lush greenery, birdsong, and flowing water.
Every visit is slightly different — and that is part of the experience. Have a look at our blog post about the 7 most beautiful waterfalls near Tallinn, Estonia.
Walking & terrain
The hike includes forest paths, riverbanks, and uneven natural terrain. Some sections may be slippery or muddy, depending on weather conditions. This tour is best suited for active travellers who are comfortable walking in nature and dressed appropriately for the season. Check our blog for how to dress during the cold season.

Starting point: Joaveski area in Lahemaa National Park
Along the river, you can see traces of old industry, including the remains of a historic sawmill and a small hydroelectric power plant that still operates today.
We usually begin the hike here, taking time to get familiar with the surroundings and enjoy our first waterfall. Joaveski Waterfall was originally a single drop but was later reshaped into several smaller cascades during past construction works
Walking through the forests of Lahemaa National Park
Along the way, we may pass old farm buildings, tall trees, and untouched woodland that give a good sense of rural Estonia.
The exact route may vary depending on conditions, but the focus remains on walking, observing, and enjoying the national park’s calm atmosphere.
Nõmmeveski waterfall and river canyon
Deeper in the canyon, you can also see the remains of an old hydroelectric plant. This is one of the rare places in Estonia where you can safely taste clean spring water directly from nature.
Forest trails and Vasaristi waterfall
The path often follows the edge of a calm canyon, offering good opportunities for short breaks, photos, birdwatching, and quiet moments in nature.
Vasaristi Waterfall is smaller than the others but has its own charm. Nearby, the stream disappears into natural sinkholes and flows underground for nearly 200 metres — an unusual geological feature in Estonia.
After visiting this area, we gradually make our way back toward the starting point. Hiking in Lahemaa is grounding and refreshing, especially in winter when the landscape feels calm and untouched.
Optional tips to enhance your experience:
- Three Waterfalls + Forest Bathing — a deeper forest experience with longer walking sections and more time spent away from roads and viewpoints.
- Three Waterfalls + Forest Bathing + Jägala Waterfall — a full-day nature immersion, suitable for guests who want to spend most of the day outdoors.
- Possible bonus stop: Valaste Waterfall — available only under suitable natural conditions. This is a possible extension, not a guaranteed stop.
- Optional cultural stop: Valgejõe Veinivilla — a relaxed visit to a small local winery by the river, ideal for a calm ending to the tour. Availability depends on opening times and should be requested in advance.
- Private tour flexibility: The route, walking distance and focus of the tour can be adjusted. If you would like to include manors, villages, coastal areas or additional walking time in Lahemaa, let us know in advance.

Tour Reviews
Lovely day trip walking to the waterfalls & in the forested area of Laheema National park. Stassi was a great tour guide, aided by Tonis. It was a proper winter wonderland experience.
The hiking lovers tour and three waterfalls was absolutely exceptional! The scenery alone was worth the trip — peaceful forest trails, untouched nature and three stunning waterfalls that each had their own unique charm. Our guide was fantastic – knowledgeable, friendly and clearly passionate about Estonia’s nature and history. We learned so much, thanks!
The National Park tour was good. And it was a good experience to see the nature, as in with eyes of a native person. Our guide Kaire was nice, friendly and good with all of us, and explained keenly with details!
Thank you!
