2-day trip to Lahemaa National Park and Prangli Island
Two of Estonia’s most popular tours are combined into one overnight adventure. Spend a day in the oldest national park, then sleep on a quiet island by the sea.
Highlights of the tour:
- Visit Jägala waterfall, the widest natural waterfall in Estonia
- Walk the boardwalk through the peaceful Viru bog
- Step inside a Baltic German manor with centuries of history
- Explore a traditional Estonian fishing village on the Lahemaa coast
- Stay overnight at the seaside Villa of Nature Energy on Prangli island
- Discover Prangli’s legends and natural gas seep on an open-top truck tour
Lahemaa National Park is only an hour’s drive from Tallinn, yet it feels like another world. This charming stretch of the northern coast covers protected primeval forest, small rivers, hiking trails, and centuries-old manors. Your guided day starts here, with stops at Jägala waterfall, a historic manor, a coastal fishing village, and a walk through Viru bog on the way back.
In the late afternoon, we drive to Leppneeme harbour and take the one-hour ferry to Prangli island. Prangli is the only permanently inhabited island in northern Estonia, with its own dialect, strong fishing traditions, and a quiet way of life untouched by mass tourism. You will spend the night at Villa of Nature Energy, right by the sea, with a private sauna and the kind of stillness that is hard to find on the mainland.
The next morning, after breakfast at the villa, you join a guided island tour on an open-top Soviet-era truck. It is the most fun way to see the church, the small open-air museum, the coastal villages, and Prangli’s famous natural gas seep, where gas escapes from the ground and can be ignited. After the tour, the afternoon is yours to explore the sandy beaches, pine forests, and quiet villages before the ferry back to the mainland.

Drive to Lahemaa and stop at Jägala waterfall
It takes about an hour to drive from Tallinn to Lahemaa, Estonia’s oldest national park. On the way, we stop at Jägala waterfall, the widest natural waterfall in Estonia. Lahemaa means “land of bays” and covers a large area of protected primeval forest, small rivers, and hiking trails. While it is not a zoo, it is home to rich wildlife.
Visit a historic Baltic German manor
Our first stop inside Lahemaa is either Sagadi or Palmse manor, depending on the season. Both give you a glimpse into the life of Baltic German landowners who ruled the Estonian countryside for centuries, and into rural life in Estonia, past and present. Each manor also has a museum with exhibitions about local nature and history (entry tickets extra, not included in the tour price.
Explore a traditional coastal fishing village
Next, we visit Altja or Käsmu, two of the best-preserved fishing villages in Estonia. You will see traditional wooden architecture and the coastal way of life. A short walk to the sea gives you a different view with every season: sandy beaches in summer, dramatic storms in autumn, and frozen sea in winter.
Walk through Viru bog
On the way back to Tallinn, we walk along the boardwalk through Viru bog. A bog is a wetland with a thick peat layer and limited vegetation adapted to this environment. The walk is easy and refreshing, and your guide will share stories about Estonian folklore connected to the bogs.
Transfer to Leppneeme harbour and ferry to Prangli
Prangli is the only permanently inhabited island in northern Estonia, populated for more than 600 years. It has its own dialect, a strong fishing tradition, diverse natural landscapes, and friendly locals. We drive you to Leppneeme harbour on the Viimsi peninsula, where the ferry to Prangli takes about one hour.
Settle in at Villa of Nature Energy
On arrival, a transfer takes you to the villa. You can relax, heat up the sauna, and enjoy the stillness. Dinner can be pre-ordered from the catering menu and delivered to the house, or you can cook for yourself with ingredients you bring along.
Guided island tour by open-top truck
After breakfast, you join a guided tour around Prangli in an open-top Soviet-era truck. It is the most fun way to see the key sights of this small island (just 6.4 km²). The guide shares stories about the coastal people, local legends, and historic sites, including the open-air museum, the church, and Prangli’s famous natural gas seep, a spot where gas escapes from the ground and can be ignited.
Free time on the island
After the tour, you have a few hours to explore Prangli on your own. The island is untouched by mass tourism, with sandy beaches, pine forests, and quiet villages where traditional island life is still visible. Have lunch in the village or pack a picnic for the beach. At 16:00, meet us at Kelnase harbour for the ferry back to Leppneeme. From there, a transfer takes you back to Tallinn city centre.
Optional tips to enhance your experience:
- In winter, make snow angels, find wild animal tracks, and walk on a frozen river or sea ice.
- In summer, hug trees, pick and taste wild berries, swim in the refreshing Baltic Sea, or in a bog lake.
- Visit the forest museum or main house museum at Sagadi manor for a deeper look at Estonian forestry and manor life.
- Add bog shoes to the Viru bog walk for a more adventurous experience
- Ask us to heat up the sauna at Villa of Nature Energy
