are collapsed, forming underground lush mini-islands? Why the tsar’s grandiose plan to build 39 tunnels was never finished? Just a 20-minute drive from Tallinn city center.
Astangu is like a wild jungle, with more than 80 species of birds.

  • Discover the compelling history and breathtaking nature of Astangu.
  • Hike in tunnels that were used to store mines, torpedoes, and ammunition.
  • Learn more about bats, since nowadays the very same tunnels are home
    to these night creatures.
  • Walk on the old railway.
  • Enjoy the views from 15m Mäeküla limestone clint.

We hike about 4 km on easy terrain. Nevertheless, please wear comfortable shoes. We visit two tunnels that are pitch-black.
Therefore, take a flashlight with you. You can also use your phone’s flashlight. The hike takes about 2 hours.

The hike to Astangu surprised us very positively – nature was almost in the city, but it felt like it was somewhere further away. The trails were interesting and accessible, and the guide was able to draw attention to both nature and the history of the area. A great place to get out in the fresh air and make new discoveries!
